Research initiatives related to experimental hydrological basins include:

  • ERB-Germany

German FRIEND-Water/ERB Working Group  The “FRIEND-Water/ERB“ working group deals with small hydrological research areas in Germany.

Their website includes the Braunschwaig Declaration: The need for a global network of long-term small hydrological research basins (4 pages, Koblenz 2010).

  • EURO FRIEND-Water

The FRIEND-Water program is a flagship initiative within the Hydrological Intergovernmental Program (IHP) from UNESCO. FRIEND stands for “Flow Regimes from International and Experimental Network Data”.

  • LTER-Europe

The LTER-Europe (Long-Term Ecosystem Research in Europe) seeks to better integrate traditional natural sciences and holistic ecosystem research approaches that include studies of the human component. The LTER-Europe is the networking component of the European LTER and consists of 26 national LTER networks (as of April 2025).
